"Finnish trip of Clelia & Franz & Fede by sgh" (=fede=me)

Prologue:
***Once upon upon a time (5th of december 2003) Franz phoned Fede...
Franz: "Hi fede, I’m buying the tickets to go in finland, did you think about what i said? about finland?"
Fede "Actually no. Now i’m driving, i’ll check the papers you sent me when i’ll be back at home"
Franz "But i’m buying the tickets right now, before ryanair decides to raise the prices, are you coming?"
...
Fede "ok, buy the ticket also for me!"

***So the adventure started... but the group was still uncomplete. Clelia decided to join and after some sms such as:
"I’m coming to finland with you!!! ...but where? can you tell me the name of the city we have to fly to?"
she finally booked the ticket:
07/12/2003 21:42 (translated)
"Fede,franz..i booked the tickets!! Now i’m officialy one of the tripmate!! ...hoping that the booking was ok! cle"

Chapter 1 05/12/2003 - Meeting in Verona:
18:10 ...just bought the train ticket Padua-Verona... a voice is speaking:
"Train ???? will leave 20 minute late..."
fuck!! I hate italian train!!
18:40 ... still waiting for my train while people was looking at me asking themself if i was an alien... everybody was freezing and i was almost sweating!! Nobody could now that i was testing the ultratechnological equipment that i bought for the finnish winter :)
18:55 finally on the train...
19:30 arrived at the station in Verona (why on the timetables the train need 55 minutes to get to verona if it can cover the distance in almost 30 minutes? damn!! Italian shit train system!!!)
...
***At Franz’s home:
"i’ve got 12 jumpers"
"i’ve got a polartech t-shirt"
"i’ve got invulnerable boots"
"i’ve got the jacket of the infinite warmth"
"i’ve got an intelligent headband"
"i’ve got multiple gloves of iceclimbing"
"i’ve got wine... actually for panu but if it’s too cold..."
"...but were is clelia?"... "i’m here!"... A huge green backpack was speaking!
No, it’s nor lord of the ring or a fantascientic story... we were just checking the equipment!!! ;)

***Evening:
Verona is covered by fog, the best weather to find out the weak point of out weapons!!!
So after a beer in Verona’s downtown we found ourself chatting and walking around:
"my nose is 5°C less than my hand"
"my weaker point are the cheeks!"
"there is a bothering wind that infiltrate between the jacket and the scarf, i need a better scarf"
"the boots are ok, but i need to wear wool socks first and then cotton one to improve the heat insulation"
...
the crazyness was taking us!!!

***Special thanks to:
-Franz mother that cooked a wonderful risotto!!
-Nadia that phoned us!
-The fog of Verona to give us the chance to try the equipment
-The "ginos" of Verona that was looking bad at my heavy boots!

Chapter 2: Going up... 06/12/2003 Tuesday
***0700: alarm clock is ringing but i was already awake after a good sleeping on a sofa...
I switched on the light, I looked out of the window "I’m going to finland" i was thinking...
...breakfast... franz is driving us to the airport af brescia...
...me and clelia fell asleep...
...franz miss the exit...
...franz take the exit that he missed... (dont ask how!!)
...finally arrived at the airport!!

no problem with the luggage, the plane is taking off! time: 11:00

***12:10 London Stansted
"we have a lot of time, our plane to Tampere is at 15:15!"
...we should never have said it... after more than an hour of waiting at the check in, after a bitch cursomer of the ryainair that said that our handluggage was too heavy (9kg instead of 7kg) and after after another infinite queue to board on the plane finally we were sitting on another plane... The PLANE to TAMPERE!!!
Take off at 15:20, the sunset was behind us but i didnt care maybe because i didnt know that i wouldnt have seen the sun again until yesterday, i was staring at the black sky in front of us, the sky above Panu’s Land, the sky of the aurora borealis... ehi!! but is cloudy!!! It impossible to see auroras when it’s cloudy!!! Fuck!!

***20:15 Tampere airport... the landing strip is white, the ground is white, the buildings are white, actually also the planes are white!! We get down from the plane trying to understand how cold is the air... sniff, sniff... mah... it doesnt seem so cold, -5? -10? in the mountain is definitely colder!!
And then the first contact with the finnish security system. Each passport is checked and who is entering finland is registered, ~10 seconds per person, ~300 persons, ~3000 seconds, ~1 hour in a queue full of finnish dressed like us in summer, erasmus studends (3 italians!)... (PS: the bulding was so small that half of the queue was waiting outside...)

Bus (6 euro for 15 km!!): the driver speaks perfect english, franz chat with him while we are waiting to leave for Tampere downtown... we check the mobile network, perfect reception! of course!! we are in the nokia empire!!

***Tampere Downtown
Our train to Jvaskyla will leave in 1 hour so we decide to go eating something because we are really hungry!!
Everything is covered by ice... but people dont care, streets are covered by ice... but drivers dont care, pavements are covered by ice... and we care!!! Expecially franz that hurted lightly his good knee!! :(
Mc Donald: the only open place were we can eat, diet or a Mc Donald burger?? blinded by the hungryness we made the bad choice... McBurger... i didnt remember McDonald burger are so shit!! But at least we had something to speak about and to complain on the train!!
..
***Train: Tampere-Jvaskyla 21 euro!
really a nice train. Do you now that in finland there is Pendolino? (I’t an italian train) I’m not joking. It seems that finnish people keep on really good consideration Italy!!

***Jvaskyla: Panu is waiting for us at the station!!
After the first greeting...Hello, hi, how r u... finally we discover our next destination: Panu’s Summer House!!
But Summer House is for summer, isn’t it? So no confort? No! Because Panu’s Summer House is a luxury cottage!! A big wood stove for heating, tv, stereo, internet... and all this 20km from the city in the middle of nowhere!!
By the way, the place is wonderful... in the middle of a forest on the border of a lake!!!

...i forgot to say that the road was white for the snow... and where it wasn’t white it was like glass for the ice!! But Panu is finnish so he didnt care!! ;)

***End of the first day!

Special Thanks:
-Franz’s Mother to bringing us to the airport!
-Ryanair to be so cheap!
-Panu to picking us up at the station!

Chapter 3: Snow hiking! 07/12/2003 Wednesday
***4am
...what’s that? a nightmare... no only Franz that is snoring!! Fucking Franz!! Fortunately he stopped after some punch :)

***11am
1st waking up in finland!! Smell of wood (tha summer house is built with wood), silence except for the wind, outside the sun is just rised but i didnt saw it because it hided immediately behind the clouds...
breakfast (continental breakfast, so nothign exotic), then straight to the city to pick up a friend of Panu (Jusse)!
There is nobody around, young people are at school...
We reach panu’s friend’s house...
"why that electric plug on the wall of the house?"
"it’s for the car"
"???"
"for the car, to keep the engine warm when it’s -30. Otherwise the engine dont start..."
"ahhh!"

***afternoon
(no lunch, never eaten in a such random time in my life!!)
Hiking time!!! We had to check if there was enough wood to make a party in the Jusse Summer House!!
So after 30 minutes walking on the snow and on a frozen lake (the ice didnt break but Panu told me that sometimes it happens... and he was saying that while we were crossing the lake!!! Bastard!!) we reached the cottage... 2 rooms (1 big room and the sauna that never miss!! There is one sauna per 4 inhabitants!!)
The wood was enough so we planned to make the party the day after.
In the meanwhile we were thinking what to to the next days. Franz Clelia and me were thinking that we couldnt bother Panu for more than a couple of day so we decided to go to the Lapland for the weekend. The party was planned for Thuesday!

***beer time
after a cold walk on the snow why not a beer? So we went to Jveskyla Downtown for a beer and we met another Panu’s friend, Alexi. Probably the best of the company... he gave me 2 cd of finnish metal!!! :)
After the beer (actually not really good) we tryed to inform about the cost of renting a car and about the train and... finland is bloody expensive!!!

***evening
Finnish dinner with fish and potatoes... and italian wine of course!! Not so bad, but italian food is better!!
Partecipants: Panu, Sanna (Panu’s girlfriend), Jusse, Ville & Allie (just married...and younger than me... and they are waiting a baby... mah!!), Franz, Clelia and me of course!

***00:00 after evening... Sauna!!!
Sauna? What that? Sauna is a room hotted up with a wood or electric stove (our was with wood that is better) to 80-90°C...
First question of Franz... "has somebody ever died in a sauna?" ... panu:"umm... i dont think so"
Second question... "it’s true that you’ll go in the freezed water after the sauna?" ...panu:"no, WE’ll go in the freezing water..." ... "WHAT???? Are you crazy???"
Third question... "can i write my will, please?" ;)

I dont know if you have ever been in a finnish sauna, i didnt. The first impression when i entered the sauna was, "It’s HOT" and Panu said "no, it’s only 65°C" :-|
time was passing fast in the sauna with Panu, Alexi and Franz. Speaking about how sauna work we quickly reached a "mine field" the icy water bath after the sauna... and maybe confused by the hot or maybe because i was really hot or maybe because Alexi challenged me, i said "Why not?"
...
5 minutes after...outside
wind was blowing strong and cold while the light of the moon was glooming thru the clouds running fast in the sky, the snow was singing under my shoes (no cloth, only shoes and gloves to climb down the metal latter to the icy water of the lake), "just do it" i was thinking... i went down in the water...
...
...
...actually it wasn’t so cold!! Of course, the water is more or less 4°C, the wind is between -5 and -10°C!!
So now you know that after a sauna you can go in the cold water (only for few seconds of course) and you wond feel cold!!
Of course also Franz did it!!

End of 2nd day!!

Special Thanks:
-Sanna’s cooking!
-Panu’s Summer House!
-Panu’s Sauna!

Chapter 4: Drinking! 08/12/2003 Thursday
***9am:
8 hour of sleep... not bad but we didn’t know what was preparing the future for us...
Anyway after breakfast we packed all our stuff ready to move to Jusse summer house for the party!!
Then we went to buy the alcohol... and nobody bought any bottle of water... just beer... umm...

***14pm:
Panu, Jusse, Ville, Franz, Clelia and me with all our luggage, with all the food, with all the drinking in 1 car...
panu:"no problem, it’s legal to drive with more than 5 people in hte car if it’s just for few km"
...hei!! I drove with a dozen person in Aberdeen!! I’m a pro!!
***15pm:
We reached the summer house... and we had to prepare everything: set on the stoves and the fireplace, dig a hole in the lake to take the water for the sauna, cut the wood, eating something (something like lidl’s pizza...maybe worse!!)
***16pm:
First turn of vodkas!
...
...
...
...
the rest of the day is quite foggy...
...
ok, ok, you want to know!!
...
but there is something that will be kept silent...
...
Clelia and me started immediately to cheat drinking and cheering with beer and vodka instead of vodka, unfortunately Franz didn’t think about it and after 4 glasses of vodka he was quite... happy!
A sauna followed at the end of the afternoon and we managed to convince Clelia to join the sauna... ;) but...
...but she went away almost immediately because the sauna was too hot! An excuse? Maybe not, there were 100°C in that bloody hell!!!! After 5 minutes i was running on the snow still sweating, but at least I destroyed a lot of alcohol, that was good considering that the drinking time was far from the end!!
...
btw: some picture have been taken... and somebody was not wearing a towel...
...
***20pm
Cooking time!!
Finnish Fish: cut the fish from the head to the tail, add salt and some spices, nail it to a bench and cook it keeping the bench vertically next to the fire using butter to avoid that the meet of the fish gets too dry.
We were all together around the fire (outdoor) drinking beer and chatting (Ville was trying to chat up Clelia) when we started a funny dialogue (i dont remember exactly):
Franz "what i’ve done in the late afternoon?"
others "you where going around naked taking pictures"
Franz "are you joking"
others "No"
Franz "you are joking!"
others "No, we have the pictures!"
Franz "Pictures? Which pictures?"
others "The picture that we took with Panu’s camera and Clelia’s digital camera"
Franz "Fuck! I dont remember!"
...
if you want a more detailed summary ask Franz, for sure he remember everything!! ;)

***23:55 pm
Franz already left to go to sleep, Clelia and me succeed to disappear from the circle around the fireplace to go to sleep either... but just after 2 minutes that we are in the sleeping beds the finnish people jump in the room (they were really drunk) and to keep us awake why not jumping on us while we were laying in the sleeping beds? I was on a protected part of the room, between the table and the wall... Franz and Clelia were not so lucky... and now I’m sure that Clelia is secretely a body builder!!! She still alive after 3 man jumped on her and franz (expecially on her because franz was next to another wall)...

End of the day!

Special thanks to:
-Jusse’s Summer House!
-Finnish Beer!

Chapter 5: After drinking! 09/12/2003 Friday

***1 am
Franz: he was lucky before but now Ville is sleeping on his legs and he cannot move...
Clelia: she’s sleeping between Franz and Jusse
Me: I’m looking for some cold air passing thru the wood wall... the temperature in the summer house with the stove burning like hell and the oil lamps lit is probably around 40°C!! (10° on the ground level, 70° on the ceiling level).
Panu: phoning to his girlfriend!

***4am
Finally I gave up, thirsty I went around looking for some water (but there is no water) and I opened the door looking for fresh air...
Panu decided to reach Sanna in the city, he phoned to a taxi trying to explain how to reach the "mittle of nowhere"!!
Franz waked up more thirsty than me!
We found a bottle of Jaffa (the finnish Fanta)... now we can go to sleep!

***12am
Time to go, everybody was dazed cause probably more due a bad night of sleep than the alcohol, so there almost nothing to say! ...but our train leave at 19:30... where is Panu? We thought in Panu’s house...
...
...
but we were wrong!! Nobody knew where is Panu!!
Fortunately Alexi and Allie arrived in front of Panu’s house and we went to drink a coffe in downtown with them!
In the meanwhile we discovered that Panu was in Sanna’s house...

***17pm
Finally in Panu’s home with Panu. His parents cook a wonderful dinner for us (at 18:00 ... why in northern country they eat so early?)

***19:30pm
Train to Rovaniemi! Lapland!!!

***22:00pm
Change in Tampere!

***23pm
...chatting...
***00am
...trying to sleep...

End of the Day!

Special thanks to:
-The bottle of Jaffa!
-Alexi and Allie who took care of us while they were trying to find Panu!
-Panu’s Parents for the dinner!!

***08am
Arrived in Rovaniemi!!! A guy of the Budget rental car is waiting for us at the station with our car!!
Driving on the ice is not so bad... expecially if you forgot to release the handbrake!! opss

***0830
Downtown of Rovaniemi... we were all tired and we wanted a coffe but in that fucking freezing town the only shops that open before 9am are the hairdresser!!! Crazy!! And they were full of people waiting their turn!! no joking!!

***0930
Finally we managed to find a cafe in a huge commercial center (5 shops total...)

***1000
Still half asleep we left Rovaniemi, direction North to a hostel in the middle of nowhere north of the polar circle!!!
I was driving, strange sensation, the winter tires make you feel to have a good control, but actually the car move a little bit right and left, expecially on the snow when you try to go reverse and the car decide to move closer and closer to the trees!!
Driving apart the weather was crap but the view was incredible!! The road run in the middle of a hill forest and there is nothing but some tiny town with red painted houses and of course the antennas for the mobile. The wind draw celtic shapes on the ice with the snow that behave like powder with so low temperature, the light was a little bit stronger than moonlight but getting used to the darkness and thanks to the reflecting properties of the snow it seemed... not so dark!

***12am
We reached the hostel... of course in the middle of nowhere!! Not really expensive considering the crazy prices that we found in the city... The owner is an old man that laughed continuously (madness sympton?), Only the son speak some bad english (he thought that tonight=two nights!!)... he was in Bolzano for holyday this winter, small world!
Bedrooms, bathroom, small kitchen, sauna and it’s warm! Not bad!! But the parking places was in the middle of the snow (note for the day after)!

***afternoon
Just going around meeting reindeers, elks, russian people, watching magic landscapes and taking pictures!
We reached a farm in the middle of ... the forest and ... 55euro per person for a 1-hour trip with the sledge... WHAT? let’s go hiking! ... too cold?... let’s go shopping? Ok!!
So after 20 minutes we were in a couple of turistic shops looking for some cheap tipical thinghy... Franz bought some tipical hat (you hate to see it! It’s wonderful!!) and Clelia a small reindeer (peluche, not alive!!)...
...and also here the shop assistants were laughing all the time...
...umm...
...umm...
there are 3 possible reason:
1) they look at tourist like a heap of money.
2) they are close to suicide and they enjoy the last hours of life.
3) they are completely mad!

And after 1 hour we were in a small village. After discovering that tourist information are closed on Saturday and Sunday (They are genius! Aren’t they? :-S) we stopped in a bar for a hot chocolate and for something to eat...
"Could you tell me what is inside that cake?"
"...:-|..."
"...ingredients... cake..."
"...:-|..."
"Son of a bitch!"
"...:-|..."
"Ok, they dont know english and i dont know suomi or russian..."
...but we managed anyway to ask for a hot chocolate...

***evening
Pasta al tonno and elk meat in a warm place (the hostel) is the best we could ask after a day spent travelling!!
But dont ask for internet... "yes, yes, we have internet!!" it doesnt work and they’ll charge 6euro per hour!!!
Outside is almost snowing but we still search the sky looking for some clear patch... nothing...

***0000
Tired and a little bit sad, in anticipation of two night without sleep we decide to go to bed early...after a sauna...

***0200
Again!! Fucking Franz is snoring! At least I can sleep in another bed in another room...

End of the day!

Special thanks to:
-Reindeers and elks!
-Finnish government that dont use salt on the road because it’s toxic for the trees.
-Rovaniemi’s heirdresser to make the morning city alive
-Thanks to Martina’s Cafe to be closed at 9am while we were looking desperately for a coffee!

Chapter 7: Lapland! 10/12/2003 Sunday

***1100
clelia "Fede, wake up!!"
fede "where? who? what the fuck!!"
clelia "it’s late!! it’s 11 and we missed the trip with the snowmobile!!"
fede "..."

Outside it’s snowing... umm the car is under the snow... who cares? today is franz turn to drive! :)
Breakfast, washing up (with hand soap... we didn’t have soap for dishes!)

***1200
everybody and everything is in the car, the return trip is starting!! From now afterwards we’ll travel only to South!
brumm brumm... ops... blocked in the snow after 20 meters!!
...brumm...brumm... the car doesnt move, the engine roars useless...
franz "no, no, we have to push the car!!"
franz try again while i’m pushing the car... nothing... only the tires that start to smell burned...
fede "stop stop!! me and franz to push, clelia is driving"
clelia "what? i’m not able!"
clelia burn a little bit more the tires... nothing...
fede "stop stop!! I’ll try!!"
Thanks to Panu’s advice about snow driving I use some secret tricks and ...the car moves!!
...and i go away...3rd Panu’s rule... dont stop in the snow if there is not a very good reason!! ;)
...and i could enjoy last time with the handbrake while franz and clelia were returning the keys :))

***1400
Santa Clau Park!!
Nice, actually nothing more than a lot of expensive shops and herds of italians!!
clelia "please... I want a picture of Santa Claus..."
me and franz "no way! it’s 43 euro in total!!! are you crazy?"
...after minutes of hard fighting we reached a compromise... only one picture and clelia promised to make 2 copies for me and franz in Italy (Clelia: before xmas 2004 thanks!! ;)

We took a picture with Santa Claus... 17 euro + 13 euro per copy
me and franz "no way!!"

***1500
Back in Rovaniemi, the train will leave at 21, let’s go to the Articum Museum (about lifestile of lappons, ecc... ecc...)
Nice Museum but 11 euro (8.50 for students) was definitely expensive! There wasnt even an exposition about aurora borealis!!
NB: in the guestbook of the museum we signed "What we are!" ... if you go to Articum Museum in Rovaniemi in Finland check it out!!! ;)

***1700
Downtown of Rovaniemi... and now? Let’s go to a pub...

Car returned after some really good handbrake by franz!!
Finally we are on the train... we should sleep because the train will arrive in Tampere at 0555... no way!
It seems to be in Viale Mazzini (the shop main road of Verona!) during the xmas shopping holiday!!
Groups of people run up and down going from the smoking room to the resturant wagon, to the resturant wagon to the smoking room... and so on... a lot lot lot lot lot of times.... from 2100 to 0555...never stopping...
A blond fat wierd woman smiles to Clelia... some finnish people drink definitely too much...

Special thanks to:
-Hemingway Pub, Rovaniemi.
-The taxi driver that told us where is Articum Museum
-Thanks to Panu’s Manual of Snow Driving!!

Chapter 8: Return! 11/12/2003 Sunday

***0555
Tampere morning...
3 zombies were walking in the station carring heavy backpacks...
the city was silent, so we decided to wait a couple of hours in the warm train station...

***0800
Time to go out!!
Everything was covered by ice... but people didnt care, streets were covered by ice... but drivers didn’t care, pavements were covered by ice... but we didn’t care...
The morning passed as we walked miles and miles in the city (Most of the museums are closed on Monday in Tampere!)
visiting some shop when we were too cold... but was that cold that kept us awake...

***1500
After ~6 hours of walking we decided to rest a little bit in a pub... Robert’s Cafe!!

simbolo religioso dalle pareti.
